Seven more Saturday cleanups before Thanksgiving

Posted October 3, 2013

Volunteers can sign up for seven more grounds cleanups at Wardenclyffe, Saturday mornings, 9–12, through November 23 (except October 12). Enter through the main entrance on Randall Road, north of Rt 25A in Shoreham, NY (GPS: 40.948300,-72.90034); park on site and sign a waiver of liability.

Some teams of volunteers will continue the general grounds cleanup and maintenance: trim bushes and trees, rake leaves, spread wood chips and mulch, mow grass, paint, pick up trash/litter, etc. Other teams will set up a nursery to rehabilitate native plants from the site or establish a yard-waste compost area. Depending on available tools and expertise we will take down a few trees that are too close to buildings.

Please bring available yard/garden tools (rakes, branch cutters, pruning shears, and pitch forks); powered weed-whackers and blowers are a plus. Please clearly mark all personal tools.

This is an active clean-up site with some potentially hazardous situations including poison ivy, ticks, broken glass, nails, sharp metal, etc. Sturdy, protective shoes are a must (!).

Note that we do not yet enter and work inside the buildings, because there is no lighting, and the interior is hazardous, due to many years of neglect and significant vandalism, especially in recent years.

Because we still lack proper facilities, we limit the work sessions to three hours.
