TSC Reaches Out at World Maker Faire

Posted May 18, 2011

In September 2010, TSC participated in the first World Maker Faire held at the New York Hall of Science (http://www.nysci.org/) in Queens, NY.
Maker Faire is an exciting event that was started in 2006 in California by the editors of Make magazine. According to the website: “Started in San Mateo, California in 2006, and also being held in Detroit and New York, Maker Faire is the premier event for grassroots American innovation. As the World’s Largest DIY Festival, this two-day family friendly Faire has something for everyone—a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the Maker mindset.”
TSC brought along kits to teach about circuits—the “Circuit Challenge.” Visitors to the TSC booth could experiment with making a wire, battery and bulb creation, wherein they would try to pass a loop of wire over another wire without touching it and lighting up the bulb. (The construction guide is available here.)
Also on hand was TSC’s small Tesla coil, which drew attention every time it sent out sparks.
One of the big attractions at the Faire was Arc Attack, a musical group whose music is created using huge Tesla coils. Their performances were filled to overflowing with interested faire-goers.
TSC will be participating in the Maker Faire at Queens Hall of Science again this year, on September 17 and 18, 2011.

Nikola Tesla inducted into Long Island Technology Hall of Fame

Posted March 10, 2010

On Wednesday, March 10, 2010, Nikola Tesla was inducted into the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame. The award was given on his behalf to his next-of-kin, great-nephew William Terbo, who spoke of his famous ancestor’s impact on the world. Terbo was introduced by Jane Alcorn, president of Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, who noted the familial trend in engineering and technology: Tesla was an electrical engineer; his nephew, Terbo’s father, was an engineer; and Terbo is a mechanical engineer. Also on hand at the gala celebration at the Garden City Hotel were TSC board members David Madigan and Christopher Wesselborg. Other inductees were Leo A. Guthart, Dr. Boris Metlitsky, Dr. Nicholas P. Samios and entrepreneur ReiJane Huai, as well as nine Young Hall of Famers. (For more information, see www.techisland.org; the 2010 inductees are available here.)
